Big Bluestem

Andropogon gerardii

Big Bluestem is an important grass that normally grows from 3-8’ high. It is recognized for its rapid growth, especially in mid-to-late summer. It works as soil erosion control. Its root system can extend up to 12 ft. in the ground, which give the plant the capacity to withstand drought and the extremes of temperatures. It is winter hardy. It can be found in elevations up to 6,500ft. Also known as turkey foot because of the large-size seedhead, which resembles a turkey’s foot.
