Most of the Blue Flax seed that is sold commercially is the Linum perenne, which is a (naturalized) species from Europe. There is also a native species, Linum lewisii, which is less common. Blue Flax is a very drought-tolerant, semi-evergreen, short-lived forb that can be found throughout most of the United States on sites up to 11,000ft in elevation. It normally grows from 1-3’ tall, and is adapted to a wide range of conditions. It does well on disturbed sites. The light blue flowers bloom profusely from May – July.
