Big Bluestem is an important plains species that normally grows from 3-8’ high. It is recognized for its rapid growth, especially in mid-to-late summer. It works well for soil erosion control. Its root system can extend up to 12 ft., which gives the plant the capacity to withstand drought and the extremes of temperatures. It is winter hardy. It can be found in elevations up to 6,500 ft. Also known as turkey foot because of the large-size seedhead, which resembles a turkey’s foot.
