A common shrub that occurs in sunny, open sites most common up to 9,000 ft. in elevation. Grows from 1’-7’ in height. It flowers from June to September, and reproduces from seeds and root sprouts. Cold and drought hardy. The deep roots make this a valuable plant for controlling erosion. The stems contain a small amount of rubber, but not enough to be commercially important. A distinctive odor arises from crushed the crushed leaves. It tolerates a moderate amount of alkali in the soil. Common throughout the drier areas of the western United States.
