A moderately long-lived, palatable, deep-rooted rhizomatous legume with high feed value. Used for green chop, hay and pasture. Most cultivars are erect and grow to a height of 2-3 ft. Must be allowed to set seed every 3rd year to maintain stand. Does best with precipitation of 18” or more annually. It can be found at elevations up to 12,000 ft. Early weed control necessary as it is slow to establish. Does not tolerate overgrazing. Seed should be inoculated. Performs better than alfalfa, although less productive.
